The recent wintry weather may have turned our back gardens into pretty picture postcards, but spare a thought for the wildlife trying to survive at this time of year.
With my DIY tools still out after building last week’s log shed, this week, I set about building some bird boxes to dot around our garden.
In case you didn’t know, National Nest Box Week runs from the 14th – 21st February. It was established back in 1997, because of the lack of nesting holes in modern and renovated houses, and overly tidy woodland management policies. Since then, the annual campaign has gone from strength to strength with one simple message, ‘build or buy a nest box and give a bird a home’.
So with drill in one hand, and camera in the other, here’s a short video showing you how to build a simple bird box. If you stick to the end, then you’ll see something special.
Enjoy!
Nice! And with your jacket, you would fit right in in Maine. We have a jacket just like yours. Very common here.

Apologies Laurie, your comment must have dropped through our net. I do love those jackets, maybe I should re-locate to Maine? 🙂

No worries! As for the jacket…we can make you an honorary Mainer. I suspect the gardening season in Maine would be way too short to suit your fancy. 😉

Oooh! I hope the hole wasn’t too small!

Several birds have nested inside the home, so I am hesitant to build boxes designed to keep them around . . . although, a box outside might give some bird family a preferred option to my home.
