Chasing the Sun

Like many of us who work, when autumn comes round and the days start getting shorter, getting to the allotment before dusk gets more and more challenging.

And, unfortunately for me, by the time I get home, the sun has already headed west for the night, leaving me frustrated and holding my trowel alone in the darkness. Of course there are still the weekends, where we can garden at our leisure, but with the talons of winter taking hold, we need to get to the allotment to check, protect and harvest those tender crops. So what is a gardener to do?

Mornings! That’s right, I’m up with the lark and over to the plot before the milkman has done his rounds. Then it’s back home, making ready for the day before heading off to work.

And here’s where I’m going to let you into a little secret, it’s a wonderful time of the day to visit your plot. No one’s around, the air is crisp and nature’s thriving. From the light-fingered squirrels digging up the garlic bed, to the frisky foxes running amock over the beds. There’s a party going on over the allotment and us gardeners haven’t been invited. Morning

So if you don’t mind giving up the warmth of your beds and embracing a chilly morning, I promise you it’s worth the effort. You may not get much done, but it’s guarenteed to fuel your soul for the day. AdeSignature
